Smaug, enraged by the dwarves' attempt to reclaim their treasure, flies to Lake-town and burns it to ashes. The people of Lake-town are forced to flee, and Bard (Luke Evans), the leader of Lake-town, seeks help from the Master of Lake-town (Stephen Fry).

The White Wizard, Gandalf (Ian McKellen), appears and helps the dwarves and the people of Lake-town form an alliance with the elves, led by Thranduil (Lee Pace). The tide of the battle turns when the eagles, led by Gwaihir (Hugo Weaving), arrive and help the dwarves and their allies. The eagles attack the orcs and wargs, giving the dwarves and their allies an opportunity to gain the upper hand.
In the end, Smaug is killed by Bard, who shoots an arrow into the dragon's heart. However, Thorin is killed by Azog in a final confrontation. Dáin becomes the new king of the Lonely Mountain, and the dwarves reclaim their homeland.
