Sujok Six: Ki Constitution

In the vast and diverse landscape of alternative medicine, Sujok (a portmanteau of the Korean words Su meaning hand and Jok meaning foot) stands out as a uniquely elegant and potent system. Developed by Professor Park Jae-woo in the 1980s, Sujok therapy is rooted in the principles of traditional Eastern medicine, particularly acupuncture and energy meridian theory, but adapted into the microcosms of the hands and feet. Central to its diagnostic and therapeutic depth is the concept of the Six Ki Constitution . This framework transcends simple symptom treatment, offering a personalized and constitutional approach to health, disease, and human nature. The Philosophical Foundation: Yin-Yang and the Three Energies To understand the Six Ki Constitution, one must first revisit the fundamental dualism of Yin and Yang. In Eastern philosophy, all phenomena arise from the interplay of these two opposing yet complementary forces. However, Professor Park refined this model by introducing a dynamic, tripartite expression of energy. The "Six Ki" (Ki, or Qi, meaning vital energy) are derived from the combination of the two polarities of Yin and Yang with three fundamental energies: the Jang (creative, expansive, male energy), the Gwan (regulating, harmonizing, earthly energy), and the Eum (receptive, contractive, female energy).
