This paper examines the third narrative movement of The Story of O (based on Pauline Réage’s 1954 novel and its 1975 film adaptation by Just Jaeckin), treated here as “Episode 3.” Unlike the first two episodes—which establish O’s initial consent and her training at Roissy—Episode 3 depicts her transfer to the Samois estate under Sir Stephen. Through close analysis, this paper argues that Episode 3 transforms O’s submission from external coercion into internalized identity, using ritual branding, public exhibition, and psychological surrender to explore themes of freedom through total obedience. The analysis draws on feminist film theory, existentialism, and BDSM ethics.
