Hathi Ram’s father does nothing. That night, Hathi Ram steals the landlord’s horse and drowns it in a well. His father beats him bloody, whispering: “Gussa rakh, lekin dikhana nahi. Paatal lok aise hi jeeta hai.” (Keep your anger, but don’t show it. The underworld survives like this.)
