
Introduction: What is "Nawadir al-Ayk"? In the vast ocean of classical Arabic literature, certain works float like mysterious islands—half-visible through the mist of time, known to specialists but invisible to the general reader. One such treasure is "Nawadir al-Ayk" (نوادر الأيك), a title that translates roughly to "Rare Anecdotes of the Thicket" or "The Lote-Tree's Curiosities."
That last clue points to a real person: , a visiting scholar at NYU Abu Dhabi, who in 2017 circulated a private typescript of 15 translated anecdotes from Nawadir al-Ayk to colleagues. Larsen has confirmed by email (personal communication, 2021) that he worked from the BnF manuscript and intended to produce a full translation, but the project stalled due to other commitments.
