We track our children, our sleep, our steps, our heart rate variability—as if data could outrun death.
True crime podcasts are the clearest example. They are marketed as justice-oriented, psychology-focused, even cozy. But they thrive because their listeners live in a state of ambient fear—of walking alone, of trusting the wrong person, of the mundane concealing the monstrous. The entertainment does not cause the fear. It mirrors it, then sells the mirror back. A full lifestyle of fear, mediated by entertainment, produces a specific kind of spiritual exhaustion.
