At first glance, Enderal: Forgotten Stories looks like a mod. A massive, ambitious mod, but a mod nonetheless. It runs on the engine of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim , using its assets and mechanics as a foundation. To dismiss it as "just a mod," however, would be a profound mistake. Enderal is a total conversion—a complete, standalone game that offers a 30-to-100-hour experience with its own world, lore, characters, and gameplay systems. It is, for many players, a superior RPG to the game that birthed it.
Developed by the German team SureAI (known for previous total conversions for Oblivion and Skyrim ), Enderal: Forgotten Stories was released in 2016, with the definitive "Forgotten Stories" edition arriving in 2019. It is not set in the Elder Scrolls universe. Instead, it invites you to the continent of Enderal, a land on the brink of a cataclysm only you, a "Prophet" or "Prophetess," might prevent. The first thing that strikes you about Enderal is its world design. The setting is the Kingdom of Enderal, a land of stark contrasts. You will explore sun-drenched, Mediterranean-esque coastal cliffs, dense, misty swamps teeming with monstrous wildlife, frozen mountain passes, and the haunting, ash-choked desert of the Crystal Forest. The main narrative is a relentless deconstruction of the typical Chosen One trope. The game asks brutal questions: What if your destiny is a lie?
